The helicopter tourism sector is poised for significant growth in the next 10 years, fuelled by advancements in technology and rising demand for luxury and adventure travel. This growth extends to niche markets such as superyacht operations, where helicopters offer unparalleled convenience and exclusivity.
However, for those looking to operate commercial helicopter flights to and from their superyacht, it is essential that the helideck is certified by an Aviation Inspection Body (AIB). Without a valid Helicopter Landing Area Certificate (HLAC), charter flights carrying fare-paying passengers cannot be conducted.
For privately operated helidecks, even though certification may not be mandatory, regular inspections are strongly advised. Routine assessments by an AIB help ensure that aviation operations remain safe, compliant and aligned with industry best practices.
What does the inspection include?
As a certified AIB, we carry out a comprehensive review of your helicopter landing facilities, including:
- Dimension, layout, obstructions, deck friction levels, landing area markings and structural considerations;
- Fire detection and extinguishing arrangements;
- Emergency equipment and procedures;
- All documentation associated with helicopter operations.
Early engagement is essential
We strongly recommend engaging with an AIB at the earliest stages of a new-build or refit project. Working closely with the shipyards and design teams, we help ensure the helideck is designed and constructed to meet commercial certification standards from the initial concept stages.
This is especially important for superyachts incorporating dual helidecks, where both forward and aft landing areas must independently meet regulatory requirements. Early involvement helps avoid costly redesigns later in the build process and streamlines the path to certification.
Is it time to renew your Helicopter Landing Area Certificate (HLAC)?
Ongoing compliance is just as important as initial certification. Your Helicopter Landing Area Certificate must be reviewed every 12 months – or sooner if any of the following occur:
- There is a change in vessel ownership
- The name of the yacht changes
- There are any modifications to the helideck or surrounding structure
We recommend proactive scheduling of inspections to maintain compliance and avoid disruptions to helicopter operations. Early planning also ensures uninterrupted service for charter guests and seamless integration into your yacht’s overall operations.
